Mensen lezen romans en poëzie, ze gaan naar het toneel of de film, ze luisteren naar muziek, ze bekijken tentoonstellingen enlandschappen. De vraag is: waarom doen ze dat? Waarom vinden ze de Venus van Botticelli mooi? Waarom is Emma van Jane Austen beter geschreven dan een roman uit de Bouquet-reeks? Waarop zijn de esthetische oordelen van kijkers, luisteraars en lezers eigenlijk gebaseerd? Dit soort vragen zijn aan de orde in de esthetica. In haar inleiding tot dit vakgebied bespreekt Anne Sheppard een aantal algemene visies op kunst: kunst als imitatie van de werkelijkheid, kunst als persoonlijke expressie van een kunstenaar, kunst als vormenspel. Dan komen aan bod: smaakoordelen, interpretaties van met name letterkundig werk, bedoelingen van de kunstenaar, de rol van de critici, en ten slotte, de invloed van de kunst op ons morele oordeel. Anne Sheppard doceerde filosofie aan het Jesus en het Pembroke College in Oxford, was wetenschappelijk medewerker van de Universiteit van Durham en is sinds 1987 staflid van de Open University.

In the years around 1900, an unprecedented attack on women erupted in virtually every aspect of culture: literary, artistic, scientific, and philosophic. Many of the anti-feminine platitudes that today still constrain women's potential were first formulated during this period, as intellectuals of every stripe throughout Europe and America banded together to picture women as static beings whose sole function was sexual and reproductive. This text explores the nature and development of turn-of-the-century misogyny in the works of hundreds of writers, artists, and scientists, including such figures as Zola, Strindberg, Wedekind, Henry James, Rossetti, Renoir, Maurois, Klimt, Darwin, and Spencer, not to mention a host of now-forgotten others.

Walk into any European museum today and you will see the curated spoils of Empire. They sit behind plate glass: dignified, tastefully lit. Accompanying pieces of card offer a name, date and place of origin. They do not mention that the objects are all stolen. Few artefacts embody this history of rapacious and extractive colonialism better than the Benin Bronzes - a collection of thousands of metal plaques and sculptures depicting the history of the Royal Court of the Obas of Benin City, Nigeria. Pillaged during a British naval attack in 1897, the loot was passed on to Queen Victoria, the British Museum and countless private collections. The story of the Benin Bronzes sits at the heart of a heated debate about cultural restitution, repatriation and the decolonisation of museums. In The Brutish Museum, Dan Hicks makes a powerful case for the urgent return of such objects, as part of a wider project of addressing the outstanding debt of colonialism.
